Interesting Hay Stack Rock Factoids

• Haystack Rock is a 235-foot tall Sea Stack (Monolith)

• Three smaller, adjacent rock formations to the south of Haystack Rock are collectively called "The Needles".  
i.e. Needle in a haystack !

• Called by Captain Clark in 1805 “The grandest view these eyes have ever seen”

• 1.5 Miles South of Cannon Beach on U.S. 101  

• Haystack Rock was formed by lava flows emanating from the Grand Ronde Mountains 10 to 17 million years
ago.

• The Third Largest Intertidal Monolith in the world

• Home to a migrating Tufted Puffin Colony

• Has enjoyed Official Marine Garden status since 1990

• Haystack Rock is one of the most identifiable geological formations of Oregon.

• In the Movies: Sometimes a Great Notion , The Goonies, 1941,  Kindergarten Cop

• Area activities include picnicking, kite-flying, and bird-watching, and is the subject of countless  Artists and
photographers - the most photographed site on the Coast.

• Weighs over a Millions pounds

• Adjacent to Cannon Beach which is named after a cannon found there from Navy Schooner “Shark”
shipwrecked crossing the Columbia Bar in 1846.

• Haystack rock is accompanied by two smaller rocks. The tall, elegant one being named Sven, and the
shorter, clumsy one being named Lori.

• "Inspiration Point" was an early name for Haystack Rock.

• Home to terns, puffins and surrounding tide pools inhabited by star fish, crabs, sea slug, limpets, sea
anemone.
